Venice Diaries Part 11 – Federico Diaz “Outside Itself”
After completing the main Arsenale I shuttled across to the Arsenale Novissimo by motorboat to see the site specific project by Federico Diaz titled “Outside Itself”. Two robots follow a mathematical programme to build a sculpture from black spheres or “molecules”. This time based growing installation will contain hundreds of thousands of spheres upon its completion. The sculpture is created free from human touch and yet its form is influenced by each viewer as their movements create changes in light and darkness which are monitored by optical sensors and translated into data which is given to the robots to affect the positioning of the balls.
