Creating a new visual vocabulary
In an interview with David Lillington, John Stezaker talked about the relationship collage has with the images it uses. He describes how the images are isolated from their “proper’ function and required to be taken on their own terms. This is how I feel about the materials and objects I use in my own work. In a method similar to collage I remove selected objects from their origins, pulling the familiar into the unfamiliar, creating a form of chaos from which new points of order are able to emerge. It is in the deliberate combining with other isolated materials that new distinct and compounded meanings are created.
