Enchanted Parks Commission
The last couple of months I’ve been busy working on a public outdoor commission for Enchanted Parks. The annual event, now in its 9th year, is an innovative after-dark arts adventure, which sees Gateshead’s Saltwell Park transformed through visual arts, performance, installation and interactive works.
Developed and co-commissioned by NewcastleGateshead Initiative and Gateshead Council, this year Enchanted Parks is produced by Creative Producer, Katy Fuller of outdoor arts company, Pinwheel, as part of the annual NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival.
I won a commission to create a piece inspired by children’s fantasy in play. To fit with the Park’s theme of the celestial I constructed a makeshift rocket from second hand furniture, old wooden panels and junk, that included sound, lighting and smoke effects. It was a fun piece to work on and confronted me with new challenges that come with building work for outdoor winter conditions!
The 5 day event sold out of its 21000 tickets before opening night. I stayed for the first evening and enjoyed the magic of all the other installations – a lovely event to be part of.
