Her artistic practice has a high focus on materiality, pulling the familiar into the unfamiliar and isolating objects from their original purpose to draw out their innate language. An ornate vocabulary demonstrates a baroque influence with emphasis often on material excess and theatricality. Themes and imagery are referenced from literature including that of J.G. Ballard, Joris-Karl Huysmans’ Against Nature and George Sand’s Journey Into The Crystal.
Drawing its expressive quality from deeply human sources, the work generates connections between disparate objects creating an unexpected relatedness we both recognize and question.
Chantal Powell lives and works in Southampton, Hampshire. A PhD focusing on the psychology of human relationships informs her work as an artist. Powell’s work has been exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, most notably at The Royal West Academy in Bristol, OCCCA in California and at the 53rd and 54th Venice Biennales.
Currently exhibiting in Burning Bright in the Saatchi Suite at The Hyatt Regency (curated by Rebecca Wilson director at Saatchi Gallery) and from September in the major exhibition; Victoriana: The Art Of Revival at The Guildhall Art Gallery (curated by Sonia Solicari- principal curator Guildhall Art Gallery).
